AND IT IS WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO SUFFER.
COULD YOU DRINK THIS WATER?
(ALL PICTURES ATTEMPT TO DEMOSNTRATE THE INTENSITY OF THE WATER PROBLEM IN RURAL COMMUNITIES, YOU SEE PEOPLE GETTING WATER FROM UNSAFE SOURCES WITH OTHER DIGGING THE DRY RIVER BED TO SEE IF IT STILL RESERVES WATER)
For rural community getting safe and clean water is increasingly becoming a nightmare. Water is becoming scarcer by the day in most areas, as water sources dry up due poor environmental management. Seeing women walking long distances and end up at an unsafe water source is normal. In some cases, when it rains, communities along tarmaced roads attempt to harvert water running off the roads, usually unsafe and unclean.
Water scarcity causes an increased burden to women and young girls who do the reporductive responsibilities at home, and in some cases it may lead women to getting raped, or attacked by wild animals.
It is time the responsible authorities work out strategies, jointly with local communities, on how to address the problem. It is obvious that access to clean and safe water is essential in making MKUKUTA work and realizing the Millenium Goals.
